Networking: Start With Your Power Circle

If you’ve created a Target Company List (and if not, you can always revisit last week’s post), then you’re ready to move from planning into action. Where’s the best place to start? Your Power Circle. These are people who already know, like, and trust you. They believe in you and want you to succeed.

What Is Your Power Circle?

Your Power Circle includes the folks closest to you, both personally and professionally:

  • Professional contacts: Current/former coworkers, bosses, mentors, professors, recruiters, vendors

  • Confidantes: Friends, family, book club members, people from your spiritual or community life

  • Connectors: People who seem to know everyone, such as your hair stylist, your real estate agent, or your neighbor who runs the neighborhood Facebook group

These are the people who are most likely to take your call, read your email, and say, “Sure, I’d love to help!”

What Not to Say

Many job seekers go straight to asking their network about job openings. But unless your contact is hiring for your exact role right now, that question goes nowhere fast.

Instead, reach out with a more open-handed ask: Advice, Information, and Resources (the AIR approach). You’re looking for people who can share insight, make introductions, or recommend other organizations you haven’t considered.

What to Say (and How to Say It)

Here’s an example message you might send to someone in your Power Circle:

Subject: Seeking Your Advice and Connections

Hi [Name],

I recently made the decision to make a career change and I’m in the process of exploring new options. I'm looking for opportunities in [industry/role], and I’d really value your perspective.

I’ve attached a list of companies I’m especially interested in. If you happen to know anyone at these organizations, or have other recommendations, I’d be so grateful. Even second-degree connections or suggestions for people to talk to would be incredibly helpful.

I’ve also attached my resume to give you a sense of my background. The kind of role that excites me most is [give a quick 1-sentence description], but I’m open to a range of options where I can contribute my skills.

Thanks so much for your time and support. I’ll follow up next week to see if we might find time for a quick call.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Why It Works

When you ask for advice, you tap into people’s generosity. You give them a concrete way to help, without putting them on the spot. And if they do hear about a job that fits? You’ll be the first person they think of.

Did You Miss Step One?

If you haven’t created your Target Company List yet, pause and read last week’s post. Knowing what companies you’re aiming for is a critical part of networking with clarity. And it’s the first thing your Power Circle needs in order to help you effectively.
