AI is Changing Work, Not Erasing It
I hear a lot of folks expressing concern about AI taking over their jobs. But most roles are not going to disappear all at once. AI is changing work task by task, not job by job in a single sweep.
Will jobs keep changing? Yes. But they always have. Careers have evolved decade by decade, and even year by year, as new tools and technologies emerge.
What matters most is looking ahead to stay competitive. No matter what field we’re in, we’ve always needed to know which tools and systems are essential to doing the job well, getting hired, and staying employed.
🛠️ Find Out What Tools to Learn
AI is changing the software we use, and in some cases the processes we follow, to complete certain tasks. But that doesn’t mean those tasks are disappearing. More often, it means we need to learn the AI-supported tools that are becoming more common in our industry.
So how do you figure out what those tools and tasks are? Here are a few ways:
✅ One helpful resource is jobsdata.ai, which offers analyses and predictions about how AI may affect different jobs. If you go to Analysis > Task Visualizer and select an occupation, you can see how AI is expected to impact specific tasks within that role.
For example, in Sales Representative roles, tasks like Sales Meetings & Demos and Negotiation & Closing are considered “durable,” meaning they are not likely to be significantly impacted by AI in the next five years.
On the other hand, tasks like Prospecting & Lead Gen and Market & Account Research are much more likely to be affected by AI in the near future.
That does not mean those tasks will go away. It means that if you work in sales, it will likely serve you well to learn how to use AI tools that support those processes and make them more efficient.
✅ If that website doesn’t include your current role, or the one you want to explore, you can also use a simple AI prompt to get started. Try this:
Take the following job title [ex. University Professor] and break it down into its core tasks. Then evaluate each task individually for its likelihood of being impacted by AI in the next 5 years.
🤝 Remember to Talk to People, Too
Don’t forget the human side of this process: talk to people! In an age of technology dependence, we sometimes overlook the value of real conversations. Ask people in your industry what they’re seeing and how their work is changing.
—————
Yes, AI is changing the way we work. But not all at once. We now have more information than ever to help us think strategically about how to stay ahead of the curve. For many of us, that means learning new technology platforms, which is something we’ve already been doing throughout our careers.
Keep up the good work. We’re all learning as we go, and together, we got this. 💪
